“What should I do today?” probably everyone is asking themselves over the past few weeks. Even though politicians are assuring the public that there is light at the end of the tunnel, it seems like the finish line is nowhere near.

Don’t feel like clearing your closet or learning a new language as you promised yourself? Jump in your comfy clothes, grab some popcorn and watch some films you always wanted to see but never had time. You do now!

Let’s start with a true black and white classic. Some Like It Hot (directed by Billy Wilde) is a comedy starring the fabulous Marilyn Monroe. It is a must-see film with a light-hearted storyline that will definitely make you laugh.

Léon: The Professional is a French action thriller (directed by Luc Besson) starring Jean Reno and Natalie Portman (her debuting film role). This film depicts a real friendship between two very different characters: an anti-social killer and an abused teenager. It is a shocking and attention-grabbing film which takes you on an emotional rollercoaster.

“One of the best movies I have ever seen,” says Mantas Vingelis, second-year Drama and Film student at Manchester University. “This is a film I would recommend everyone. In my opinion, I would say it is a masterpiece.”

3. Before Sunrise (1995)

A love story which isn’t tacky? Sounds too good to be true. This American-Austrian romantic drama (directed by Richard Linklater) explores the simplicity of new love between two travellers (starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) as they spend one day walking around Vienna. The film’s sequel Before Sunset (2004) continues their love story nine years later and the second sequel Before Midnight (2013) picks things up a further nine years later.

4. Her (2013)

Have you ever fallen in love with a person you’ve never met? What if that person doesn’t even exist? Her is a science-fiction romantic drama (directed by Spike Jonze) which portrays an unexpected relationship between a man (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). The film analyses the complexity of relationships and portrays a possible near future of AIs overruling the nature of people.

5. Youth (2015)

Youth is an Italian comedy-drama directed by Paolo Sorrentino, starring Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel. Two best friends go on a holiday in the Swiss Alps and reflect on their past. Beautiful scenery and cinematography give the film a wonderful style.

“European movies should be more popular,” says Rowan Ling, 24, a filmmaker from London. “As a filmmaker, I enjoy the complexity of non-Hollywood films. Youth is one of the best movies Italians have made.”
